Hey Diddle Diddle

Hey diddle diddle,

The cat and the fiddle,

The cow jumped over the moon,

The little dog laughed to see such fun,

And the dish ran away with the spoon

So I decided to start this design project to really explore my creativity and adapt a simple concept of a nursery rhyme into visual media. I was stuck in a rut for inspiration and I decided to take the simple concept of a children's song and make it into something fun and visual that can be applied onto printed products.

Initial Ideas

The Cat and the Fiddle

The Cat and the Fiddle design was the second one created in the process. I think it was a really fun and easier design process as I draw many iterations of cats in various shapes and sizes.

The hardest part was how a cat plays a fiddle, often referencing the children's book illustrations of the nursery rhyme in how they tackle this design. I particularly liked designs that keep the cat's proportions but pose them in a less natural way to play the fiddle, while keeping my signature of very shaped cats.

The COW JUMPED over the MOON

The Cow and the moon, while being the second part of the famous nursery rhyme, was the first set of designs I created for this project, in fact it was the inspiration for the whole project.

This was by far the simplest part of the project design wise. I knew exactly what I wanted the cow to look like style wise as well as the colour scheme.

Although, since it was the first designed and created in procreate I had changed and developed a bit more through the processes of the other designs. The cow and moon therefore ended up being the simplest out of the designs, especially compared to the Little Dog and the Dish and the Spoon.

The LITTLE DOG LAUGHED to see SUCH FUN

The Little dog design was the hardest for me to come up with. In theory I thought it would be the easiest since all I would have to do was draw a dog laughing, but that felt very dull and uninspired. I came up with a few sketches of dogs laughing but none seemed to stick, I started looking up dogs looking happy and found they looked the most happy when rolling around on the floor, especially on grass. That led me to come up with the idea to create the theme around dogs rolling around in a field of flowers and then after looking at various dog breeds, I choose greyhounds as they have such interesting shapes that make up the body.

And the DISH RAN AWAY with the SPOON

I must say, I had a lot of fun personifying the dish and the spoon. I felt like I was designing characters for the next 2D animated movie. Needless to say this was the most fun I've had with the designs in this project.

I decided to keep a kitchen motif within this set of designs as the more I designed the Dish and the Spoon the more I wanted to have them on my own dishware and kitchen ware.
